This final project was to be displayed at Verna Miller Case Symposium, so it was meant to be a video from 30-60 seconds. In this piece I wanted to continue to think about my associations with quilts. I went through many iterations with the video trying different experiments. The consistent idea I followed was utilizing text in the work. I asked my peers to send me things that made them uncomoftable and I used that list in my work. I was thinking about artists like Jenny Holzer and how she incorperates text. I then had the quilt geometry cover up the words to show comfort for the uncomfortable. However, in the end the the geometry becomes distorted so the words shine through again. This is meant to show how what leaves us uncomfortable remains as a persistent thread in our life.
This inspired me to reach out to my friends to ask them for things that make them uncomfortable. I was inpspired to do this because of a Vanessa German collaboration with Mount Holyoke College. I then wanted to actually incorperate the text like Jenny Holzer does in digital works.
I played around a lot with animating collage pieces and adding shapes that distorted over it. In the end though, I felt like the text aspect was the strongest part, so I wanted to emphasize those ideas more. I used the text to almost form it’s own textile. I thought simplicity would be better, so I used just white quilt geometry.
